Phil Cortez accepts a "Buddy Poppy" from a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The Buddy Poppy became a symbol of the VFW's motto, "We honor the dead by helping the living." The poppies were made famous in a the poem "In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae. The red poppies handed out are reminiscent of the poppies growing in the battlefields of WWI.
