Air Force Operations Security in the Twenty-First Century: An Unaddressed Vulnerability

The twenty-first-century Air Force has maintained a twentieth-century operations security (OPSEC) culture, one heavily oriented toward speech and activities related to an Airman’s official duties. Air Force OPSEC policy and culture insufficiently address the connected world characterized by ubiquitous data collection. This gap creates a critical vulnerability with the potential to diminish the Air Force’s competitive edge in a future conflict. The author proposes potential safeguards and mitigation strategies, highlighting the challenge of addressing a vulnerability that is deeply intertwined with an Airman’s personal life. He further suggests adopting a framework of subjective and objective harm to reorient the Air Force’s OPSEC culture. Finally, he recommends a mitigation approach based in education and training occurring throughout an Airman’s career. Doing so will grow a culture of educated awareness surrounding the threat posed by ubiquitous data collection and population-based surveillance.

AETC starts mapping path to 2030 force development capability

With an eye towards winning the future fight against adversaries such as China and Russia, Air Education and Training Command officials hosted a workshop July 19-21 designed to give a diverse set of Airmen a chance to share their perspective of how Airmen and Guardians will learn in 2030. The scenario-planning workshop provided critical inputs to AETC’s ongoing Force Development Environment 2030 Assessment, which will serve as foundational assessment that informs the command’s force development strategy efforts.

Reporting accountability during events just got easier.  The Air Force Personnel Accountability and Assessment System recently announced that Air Force personnel can now use their mobile app (common access card not needed) to easily report accountability during natural or man-made disasters. Fatigue

Feeling run down and tired? Is fatigue impacting job performance? According to the National Safety Council more than 70 million Americans suffer from a sleep disorder, chronic sleep-deprivation can cause obesity, cardiovascular disease and other illnesses. The military environment is complex and contains challenges like increased mission tempo, long-range missions and personnel shortages that exacerbate sleep quality. Remember to take time off for self-care, include exercise, proper nutrition and getting at least seven to nine hours of sleep each night to help reduce those risks. Had a long day and just getting on the road? Driving fatigued can be just as dangerous as driving while intoxicated. Take breaks every 2 hours or 100 miles, if you find yourself dozing at the wheel, find a rest stop or hotel.

Reaching a New Audience: Strengthening the US Air Force through the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Iron Man and Captain Marvel, featuring iconic scenes with Air Force assets and characters, are the most effective electronic US Air Force publicity and recruiting tools due to these films’ diverse characters and stories with broad demographic appeal as evidenced by critical acclaim and exceptional box office receipts. Based on these findings, this commentary offers recommendations for the service to further capitalize on the popularity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and bolster diversity and inclusion (D&I) initiatives by increasing support for films that prominently feature diverse characters with a US Air Force background.

Beginning June 23, Total Force Airmen and Guardians will have the capability to learn anywhere, anytime, and on any device, with the help of a myLearning username and password. Air Education and Training Command officials announced the addition of the new identity access management tool to the learning system, which will give personnel with a Common Access Card (CAC) the ability to create a username and password to log into myLearning and myTraining on personally owned devices (e.g., phone, tablet, laptop, etc.), with the aid of a third-party authentication application.
