The 433rd Security Forces Squadron, Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas visited the Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas, Troop 1147 at the Sally Cheever Girl Scout Leadership Center in San Antonio, with an American Flag flown over Afghanistan as a form of appreciation for their support while deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Feb. 9, 2014.

"It really means a lot to our deployed forces and troops to receive care packages from our citizens back in the U.S.  But when you see a box of Girl Scout cookies, addressed from a Girl Scout Troop in San Antonio, it feels like a 'little slice of home,' even when you are on the other side of the world," said Col. Jimmie Brooks, 356th Airlift Squadron, commander.

The Airmen received approximately 50 boxes of Girl Scout cookies, cards and toiletries while they were deployed to Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan.

"A lot of time people forget what's going on, and that we have service members still active, it's great for the girls to get that reminder," said Christine Wilson, Troop Leader, 1147, Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas.  "It helps them [Girl Scouts] learn about the world and that their cookies went all the way to the other side of the world." Senior Airmen Pedro Rodriguez, 433rd Security Forces, got the idea of having the flag flown over Afghanistan, after several pilots from the Air Force offered us tours of their aircrafts and to have flags flown over Afghanistan for our family, friends and our organization.

"After we took them some of the extra Girl Scout cookies to the squadron, the members of the 75th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron based out of Georgia went out of their way to get a rare Korean War era Squadron patch to give to the Girl Scouts along with the flag they flew on a combat sortie," said Rodriguez.
