433rd AMDS shines with students on dental hygiene Published March 21, 2015 By Capt. Cris Medina 433rd Airlift Wing Public Affairs JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas -- The 433rd Aerospace Medicine Squadron found nothing but smiles with 120 kindergartners at Cable Elementary, a Northside Independent School District school, located in an economically-challenged area of San Antonio when they conducted "how to" dental care presentations to students on March 20. The dental assistants conducted three presentations which were welcomed by the students, teachers and faculty alike. "The children really benefit from this presentation on proper dental care, they're learning to care for their teeth, but most importantly, their beautiful smile," said Elisabeth Garcia, a Community in Schools program site coordinator at the school. "There is a high need in this community. Many of our kids parents work late hours, and sometimes they just don't have time to teach them," said Garcia. "The kids were excited. I think they really are going to learn something here," she said. "I think what they (433rd AMDS dental assistants) do is wonderful," said Patricia Vargas, a kindergarten teacher at the school. "Students seemed to really respond to their message. I know my students will go home and tell their families about what they learned." The students were given bags with floss, a puzzle book, and informational pamphlets for their parents. "Every kid likes to receive goodie bags," Tech Sgt. Betty Alejandrez, a 433rd AMDS dental assistant, said. "It may be dreary outside today, but I feel very proud that we could brighten their day." Senior Airman Tequina Fernandez, 433rd AMDS Airman volunteering her time to join in the effort, enjoyed the interaction with the students. "I am glad that the students enjoyed our presentation. It feels good to know we are making an impact in their lives." The Airmen believe the presentation will have an immediate and lasting effect on the young students. "Education can help fight future cavities," said Senior Airman Stacia Salas, a 433rd AMDS dental assistant, performing annual tour for this event. "Just in case they aren't being told at home how to brush their teeth, this is good for them. It also lets the community know that the base cares about them."
