433rd Mission Support Group Goes “Back to Basics” with In-Person Awards Board Published Jan. 13, 2025 By Julian Hernandez 433rd Airlift Wing Public Affairs JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas -- The 433rd Mission Support Group has taken a step back to its roots by reviving the traditional in-person annual awards board, a move inspired by the 4th Air Force Senior Non-Commissioned Officer Call to Action Open Letter. Chief Master Sgt. Jonathan Alejandro, 433rd MSG senior enlisted leader, explained the decision to return to the formal board process was made to uphold the Air Force's traditions, heritage, and uniform standards. The process had been modified during the COVID-19 pandemic. “We aimed to demonstrate our pride in our dress and appearance, as well as our commitment to service, honor, and duty,” Alejandro said. “We believed an in-person board would provide a more formal and professional setting for Airmen to showcase their knowledge and critical thinking skills, while also allowing them to connect with their peers and leadership in a more meaningful way.” A total of six Airmen competed as annual nominees before a board of four chiefs and a lieutenant colonel, serving as president of the board. The planning process involved a team of six 433rd MSG staff members, who worked to transform the group conference room into a formal board setting, complete with Air Force flags, formal table settings, and nameplates. The board members brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table, and their questions and feedback were invaluable in assessing the candidates' knowledge and critical thinking skills. The Airmen were quizzed on topics such as Great Power Competition, Alamo Wing History, Air Force policies and regulations, and leadership. “By getting back to doing our boards in-person, we are setting a tone of professionalism, respect, and tradition, which will serve as a foundation for our unit's culture and identity going forward,” Alejandro said “This approach will help to foster a sense of esprit de corps and camaraderie among Airmen and will ultimately contribute to our unit's success and effectiveness in achieving its mission.” The idea to return to the formal board process was spearheaded by Alejandro and had the full support of the 433rd MSG commander and deputy commander. Group leadership is hopeful their move will inspire other units to return to the basics and fundamentals.
