JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas --

June marks the month for men’s health, a time to highlight and recognize the good and bad practices of staying healthy for men by helping to provide awareness of health risks. While most men in the military understand the importance of staying “Fit to Fight,” it is just as important to be reminded of the health risks that come with getting older.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s website, heart disease is the leading cause of death in men and women in the U.S.; however, in men, it’s the cause of 1 - 4 male deaths. The website also states that coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease, killing more than 370,000 men in 2017.

“During an annual physical health assessment, people can always consult their health provider about heart disease and other types of screening that may come with their age groups,” said Lt. Col. (Dr.) Michael Barker, 433rd Aerospace Medical Squadron, Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, flight surgeon.

Although heart disease may be the biggest concern for men’s health, there are also other concerns to consider depending on the age group. Some of the other health risks men should keep in mind are prostate cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity.

As men’s health month helps to recognize health risks in men, it is also intended to help identify ways to stay healthy. Practicing good health habits can also help promote a healthier state of being. As men grow older, it becomes more evident that good health practices are essential.

“The thing we need to worry about is a general kind of wellness by not smoking, not drinking too much, and getting enough sleep, so your body isn’t under as much stress,” said Barker.

Even though June is the month designated for men’s health month, it is also important to take the lessons and information learned during the month of June, and apply it to your daily routine. An investment into a healthy lifestyle is an investment in one’s future health.
