Military Appreciation Weekend showcases military, history, community May 5-6 Published May 2, 2018 By Steve Elliott 502nd Air Base Wing Public Affairs JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas -- Along with more than 500 Tricentennial community partners, U.S. Army North (Fifth Army) and Joint Base San Antonio will help commemorate San Antonio’s 300th anniversary by opening base access to the public for two days of music, activities, military demonstrations and celebration of San Antonio’s unique military history. Military Appreciation Weekend at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston is planned for May 5-6, and will feature live music, rides, arts and crafts, military demonstration teams, historic tours and a polo match. The weekend will open with a 5K race on Saturday and conclude with a live music concert and fireworks on Sunday. “At the heart of Military Appreciation Weekend is our hope to showcase the military presence in San Antonio; recognize the unique military history of San Antonio; and increase community engagement,” said Maj. Jamie Dobson, ARNORTH deputy public affairs officer. Historical displays will include a Civil War field hospital from the Army Medical Department Center of History and Heritage, the Bexar County 9th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers Association and a Wright B Flyer. The Fort Sam Houston Preservation Society will have tours of the Stilwell House and Quadrangle. Brooke Army Medical Center will also have tours of the area around BAMC. Military demonstrations from all services will include the Black Daggers Parachute Demonstration Team, who are the U.S. Army Special Operations Command Parachute Team; the Army’s Fife & Drum Corps; and the 1st Cavalry Division’s Re-Enactment Group. Also on hand is a Navy working dog demonstration and Corpsman demonstration performance, as well as the USMC Silent Drill Team. “These acts illustrate the dedication of members of the military from our nation’s beginning through the present day,” Dobson said. Wrapping up the weekend will be a free performance from country music star Aaron Watson and a fireworks display. Those interested in attending who do not have military identification cards will need to access JBSA-Fort Sam Houston from the Harry Wurzbach entry control point, which is near Harry Wurzbach Road and Winfield Scott Road. In addition, attendees will need one form of a government-issued identification. Security Forces officials ask that the following items not be brought into any Military Appreciation Weekend activity: backpacks, ice chests, alcoholic beverages, glass bottle, large bags, skates, skateboards, rollerblades, bicycles, scooters, Segways, hoverboards, remote control devices (drones, cars, etc.), pets (excluding certified service dogs), fireworks, flammable liquids, laser pointer, tents, portable awning, outside food or beverages. Firearms and weapons of any kind are not permitted, with no exceptions. There is no smoking on the MAW grounds. People can bring camera bags, diaper bags and purses. All persons are subject to search at all time.
