Over a dozen Citizen Airmen attended the inaugural Blended Retirement Workshop offered here on Feb. 12 during the Unit Training Assembly. The new retirement system takes effect for eligible service members on Jan. 1, 2018.

Geremy Chavez, a personal financial counselor assigned to JBSA-Lackland, brings her experience and knowledge to assist Reservists and Active Duty members navigate not just the BRS, but also help Airmen file their tax returns and use the Thrift Savings Plan.

“Everybody’s retirement situation is different,” Chavez said. “The more information they have will help them make a decision about their retirement,” she said. Their personal health, future goals and family history are all factors that she said Airmen need to consider when planning for retirement.

“I am getting ready to retire,” Senior Master Sgt. Heriberto Estrada, a 74th Aerial Port Squadron Operations Security program manager said.

Estrada learned how to compare the current retirement plan and BRS in the class. “Airmen need to plan for retirement for their financial welfare," he said. "I’ve been planning this for over 36 years, and the time will come for when it will be very important for me.”

With tax season in full swing, tax preparation was another topic Airmen discussed in the class. Senior Airman Jonathan Lyle, a 433rd Logistics Readiness Squadron logistics planner, came away with valuable information that he believes other Airmen could use.

“I would encourage them to find out information that will affect their future,” he said. “She told me about different resources I could take advantage of, and also about credits I could get. Because I am an Airman, I can get my taxes done for free using the Military One Source,” Lyle said.

Chavez was impressed by the interaction by the Airmen. “The turnout was great. I think they learned some good information and they had good insights,” she said.

Classes will be held on Sundays at 11 a.m. in the Chapel Office in Building 910 during the UTA until June 2017.

One-on-one financial counseling appointments are available during the week and on  UTA weekends by calling 210-243-3752.
