Traffic tickets on base differ with duty status

There are two types of traffic tickets available to those who make poor driving choices on a military installation. One type requires the member to receive verbal counseling from their commander or first sergeant. The other carries the possibility of a fine and can result in points against a Reservist's civilian driver's license.

Unlike active-duty Airmen who can only receive the kind that requires them to go see the "shirt", a DD Form 1408, Reservists can receive either kind, depending upon the duty status they are in.

"If a military reservist is on base and they perform any unsafe maneuvers, and they are not on orders, they will receive a DD Form 1805, just as if they are outside the Lackland base limits," said Mr. Jason Hebert, Chief of reports and analysis for the 37th Security Forces Squadron. "A DD FM 1805 is a Federal District Court Violation notice and is prosecuted in Federal Court by Lackland's Judge Advocate office. A DD Form 1805 does come with a fine amount and it is also accompanied by a point assessment on Lackland, which could result in a driving suspension and an appearance on the civilian driving record."

Mr. Herbert explained that the term 'on orders' means any official duty status. If a Reservist is issued a ticket that does not match their current status, they have 10 days from the citation date to provide proof they were in an official status at the time the ticket was written.

"A letter or email from the 1st Sergeant or commander should suffice," said Mr. Herbert.
Air Reserve Technicians fall into the same category as an active-duty Airman. As civilian employees with a full-time commander, they should receive the first type of ticket. The important thing to remember is that any time a driver is pulled over on Lackland; make sure to show the identification that accurately reflects their current duty status and quickly get with a supervisor if the ticket type does not match the status.

To prevent getting either type of ticket, drive with care, on and off base, keeping yourself and others safe through the holiday season.
