Col. Thomas K. Smith Jr., 433rd Airlift Wing commander, made the decision to temporarily relocate seven C-5M Super Galaxy aircraft along with 75 support personnel to Biggs Army Airfield, Fort Bliss, Texas in preparation for the arrival of Hurricane Harvey to the Texas coast.

"We are relocating to preserve our C-5M aircraft assets and also preserve our Air Mobility Command mission capability in case Joint Base San Antonio-Kelly Field shuts down due to flooding," said Smith. "The purpose of the evacuation is to preserve our Rapid Global Mobility."

The 433rd AW has eight C-5's with seven on station and one in long-term planned maintenance. The plan is to have aircraft evacuated by Friday.

Biggs Army Airfield is a pre-coordinated base for evacuations that is outside the weather pattern of JBSA and is capable of handling C-5's and other Air Force airlift aircraft. Hurricane Harvey is expected to be a category 3 hurricane before making landfall Friday evening with rainfall totals in Bexar County between 6-12 inches.
