Joint Base San Antonio commemorates Days of Remembrance Published April 21, 2022 By Maria F. Rodriguez 802nd Force Support Squadron Affirmative Employment Program Manager JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas -- Joint Base San Antonio commemorates Days of Remembrance, the nation’s annual commemoration of the Holocaust, from April 24 to May 1. In addition, Holocaust Remembrance Day is April 28, which is observed each year during the week of remembrance that runs from the Sunday before Holocaust Remembrance Day, or Yom Hashoah, through the following Sunday. This year’s theme is “Determination, Hope and Honor,” which pays tribute to former U.S. Army Cpl. and Medal of Honor recipient, Tibor “Teddy” Rubin. Born in a small town in Hungary, Rubin and his family were sent to the Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria when he was 13 years old. Both of his parents and one of his sisters did not survive the Holocaust, but Rubin survived in the camp for 14 months. On May 5, 1945, Mauthausen was liberated by soldiers from the U.S. Army’s 41st Reconnaissance Squadron of the 11th Armored Division. Their compassion for people in the camp made a deep impression on the teenage survivor. After immigrating to the United States, Rubin sought to repay his new nation by enlisting in the U.S. Army. Consequently, as a rifleman in the 1st Calvary Division, his heroic actions in combat and selfless acts on behalf of his comrades while a prisoner of war earned Rubin the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest award for valor. In commemoration of the Days of Remembrance, Joint Base San Antonio is displaying posters across Joint Base San Antonio. Posters will be displayed at JBSA Military and Family Readiness Centers as well as JBSA libraries.
